This Da Vinci Classics album includes several world premieres, and is dedicated to an important composer of the Italian late Baroque and Classical era. None of Giuseppe Clemente Dall’Abaco’s works was published during his lifetime, and just one of his cello sonatas achieved lasting fame (although misattributed to Sammartini). However, in his time, Dall’Abaco was a very reputed virtuoso and composer, whose success and renown were established in London; later in his life he returned to his birthland, Italy, where he died aged 95. The works recorded here come from a manuscript, currently in the holdings of the British Library in London, and which comprises some 46 undated cello works, 30 of which are autograph works by Dall’Abaco. The quality of the manuscript suggests that it was a fair copy prepared for publication; thus, the dissemination of these works, which was suspended in Dall’Abaco’s time, is now granted, also thanks to the present recording.
